## Me in the Rust ecosystem

For me Rust is less a language preference than a boundary line: I choose it where performance and memory safety decide the design, and elsewhere I do not. On the model side my main language is Python; Rust comes in for that kind of service and tool in my [AI systems](https://muhammetsafak.com/expertise/ai-systems/) work.

Docker, Kubernetes and GitHub Actions are the tools that sit next to Rust in this work. The language alone is not a competence; it means something together with the tools around it.

Since 2024 I have kept Rust inside that boundary.

## What is the Rust Developer role?

Rust is a systems programming language without a garbage collector that aims to guarantee memory safety at compile time through ownership rules. A Rust developer is the person who writes, in this language, services and tools where performance and memory safety are wanted together.

## What does the Rust Developer do?

I use Rust for services and tools where performance and memory safety decide the design. On the model-training and data-preparation side my main language is Python. Docker, Kubernetes and GitHub Actions are the tools that sit next to Rust in this work.

## Recent writing in this area

- [A meeting recording ran to several GB, so I wrote Tan Assistant](https://muhammetsafak.com/blog/tan-assistant-meeting-notes/) (Blog, 2026-11-08): A meeting recording hit several GB, so I wrote Tan Assistant: a desktop app that keeps the audio and only the screen frames that change, then writes notes.

## Technologies I pair it with

- Rust: The language I use for services and tools where performance and memory safety decide the design.
- Python: The main language of my model-training, fine-tuning and data-preparation work.
- Docker: Development environment and deployment unit.
- Kubernetes: The orchestration platform I use to deploy and scale model serving and inference workloads as containers.
- GitHub Actions: The CI/CD pipeline that defines test and deploy steps in the repository.

## Frequently asked

### How long have you worked with Rust?

Since 2024, which is 2 years.

### What does a Rust developer do?

They write services and tools in Rust and choose the language where performance and memory safety decide the design. That is how I use it too.

### Rust or Python?

They stand for different jobs. Python is the main language of my model-training, fine-tuning and data-preparation work; I pick Rust for services and tools where performance and memory safety decide. For the Python side see the [Python page](https://muhammetsafak.com/expertise/python/).

### How does Rust provide memory safety?

Through ownership and borrowing rules, without a garbage collector; these rules are checked at compile time. A program that violates the rules does not compile.

### Which tools do you use alongside Rust?

Docker, Kubernetes and GitHub Actions. Docker is the development environment and deployment unit, Kubernetes the orchestration layer, and GitHub Actions the pipeline that defines test and deploy steps in the repository.

### Do you train models with Rust?

I do not cite Rust as a model-training tool; the training side is on the [PyTorch](https://muhammetsafak.com/expertise/pytorch/), [TensorFlow](https://muhammetsafak.com/expertise/tensorflow/) and [Python](https://muhammetsafak.com/expertise/python/) pages.
